The Twin Cities region has a tremendous opportunity to use existing and planned transit to create strong, livable neighborhoods with easily accessible connections to regional employment, educational, and recreational activities. However, understanding the various elements, players and opportunities surrounding successful transit-oriented development (TOD) can be a challenge.

This website brings together many of the existing resources and initiatives surrounding TOD in the Twin Cities, including funding sources, regional and local initiatives and transit corridor planning. There is no one-size-fits-all path to creating successful TOD, and by serving as a home base for the many TOD-related projects happening in the region, this site will help focus the conversation while highlighting the many existing resources.

Transit-Oriented Development, or TOD, is typically defined as more compact development within easy walking distance of transit stations (typically a half mile) that contains a mix of uses such as housing, jobs, shops, restaurants and entertainment. TOD is about creating walkable, sustainable communities for people of all ages and incomes and providing more transportation and housing choices. These neighborhoods provide for a lifestyle that's convenient, affordable and active, and create places where our children can play and our parents can grow old comfortably.
